It happened in New Haven County around 9 a.m., Sunday, March 13, at the intersection of Dodge Avenue and Prospect Place Extension in East Haven.

The driver, identified as Dario Alvarez-Lema, left the scene on foot prior to police arriving on the scene, said Lt. Stephen Paulson, of the East Haven Police.

When the investigating officer arrived on the scene, he noticed a smell of alcohol coming from within the Jeep Grand Cherokee, as well as broken glass beer bottles on the front passenger seat, Paulson said.

A description of Alvarez-Lema was given to responding officers, and he was located on foot in the area of Frank Street and Thompson Avenue, police said.

Upon speaking to Alvarez-Lema, the investigating officer observed the smell of alcohol coming from Alvarez-Lema’s breath, as well as his trouble with the ability to stand upright, Paulson said.

Alvarez-Lema was arrested and charged with:

  • DUI
  • Evading responsibility
  • Failure to obey stop sign
  • Driving without a license

During the booking process, Alvarez-Lema was found to have a blood alcohol content of more than three times the legal limit, Paulson said.
